Ceramic and Glass 3-D Floral Mosaic – New!
Dee Lofstrom
Saturday & Sunday, March 24 & 25, 2018
Description: Create a hanging 3-D mosaic glass and ceramic vase of flowers for your home, primarily using stained glass and broken china/ceramic pieces (plates, cups, bowls, etc. of various colors). Students will receive a plywood substrate that has been primed and framed, with a vase/pot and 2-3 Styrofoam balls of various sizes that have been cut in half and adhered with thin set in the pattern of your choosing. We will cut the flower petals, leaves, stems and background pieces with glass cutters and tile nippers into the desired shapes, and adhere them to the Styrofoam balls and plywood background using thin set mortar to create a bouquet of flowers! Students will also learn to use cement tints to create colored thin set adhesives that complement the color of the glass/china/ceramic pieces being used in the art piece. Bring tile, beads, wood (dry and shellacked), wire, shells, etc., it’s entirely up to you and your creative brain. It’s the perfect way to re-purpose those chipped and broken dishes and create a lovely work of art for you home. Hope to see you there!
Pre-requisite: Mosaic and glass cutting skills are recommended. Some experience working with thin set and grout will be helpful, but not necessary. I will need to prepare the substrates for each student prior to the workshop, so approximately one month before the workshop, I will email out a photo of 2-3 different templates to choose from. I will also include photos of finished projects for reference, so you can start collecting materials. I will bring finished examples of different ceramic and glass flowers to the workshop for reference as well. Some of my favorites are roses, daisies, dogwood flowers and of course my all-time favorite, the hydrangea.
